Google’s Chrome – the “iPod” of browsers

Sometimes when you back and look at something you’ve read before, you see new things due to the passage of time.

I re-read the Google press release about Chrome.

In it, Sundar Pichai, Google’s Vice President of Product Management said “We think of the browser as the window to the web”.

That in itself is cool to see and think about, both simple and philosophical.

Next he says “it’s a tool for users to interact with the web sites and applications they care about, and it’s important that we don’t get in the way of that experience” and I see the passion he and the rest of the team have about creating a great product for customers.

In other words, “we’re going to make you a great tool that’s very important to the things you do, but at the same time, we’re doing everything we can to be an invisible part of that process”.

In the last part of the paragraph that I like, he says “Just like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome has a simple user interface with a sophisticated core to enable the modern web.”

Does the concept of a “use it every day” product made of sophisticated technology and wrapped with a simple interface remind you of anything?

If not, turn up your iPod, relax and see if anything comes to mind.

Chrome for Mac next, Sorry Linux; Plus New Developer Tools

September 18, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Speaking at Web 2.0 Expo, Google’s Ojan Vafai talked about Chrome coming to the Mac before Linux due to size of each market.

Maybe more interesting to the non-Mac users were Ojan’s comments about “soon to come” Chrome developer tools to make it easier to develop in Javascript.

Perhaps there will be a set of standard Chrome libraries to handle all the Javascript necessary for UI elements like dialog boxes and toolbars.

When a platform has great development tools that make developer’s lives easier, more time can be spent on creating new features.

Way to go Google!

More Virus Attacks With Chrome?

September 16, 2008 by admin · 1 Comment

Anyone else caught a virus since using the Google Chrome browser?

One of the things I do is look after a small installation of PCs. In the past year, the collection of protection including a firewall, spyware sweepers, and antivirus products have kept each of these PC’s completely virus free.

Now, a few weeks after installing Chrome, the two machines which used Chrome for “everything” were both hit by virus attacks.

Coincidence?

On several other machines where Chrome was installed, Chrome was only used for work on known safe sites and they were free from viruses.

Luckily the antivirus software nailed the viruses before they did any damage.

The two “we use Chrome for everything” users said they noticed nothing different or odd until their antivirus software suddenly showed the infection message.

I’m left wondering about the “automatic download” issue with Chrome…

Admittedly, these attacks could be complete coincidence, but still….no viruses all year, now two on the machines of people who have been using Chrome for everything…

Has anyone else seen more virus attacks since using Chrome?

This makes me want to go re-read the original statement from the German government.
