When it rains it pours.

First Germany, now France are warning their citizens to find an alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Germany recommends users switch to Firefox or Chrome.

It’s true all browsers have security flaws, but to have 2 national governments speak out against your browser? That says something.

Whatever ultimately happens, Google’s browser share just got a shot in the arm.

Google Chrome is Geek Nirvana…or should I say “Geek Nerdvana”.

Programmers, IT people, scientists, members of Mensa and all the geeks worldwide get it.

Chrome is a very early release piece of software that is a building block for a better future.

That future might be a few years away, but what the heck, we’re on the right track now and that’s a start.

These same folk also know that software usually takes a couple of years to develop, so as much as they see the vision, they are also patient. After all, we’re on the right track with Google Chrome.

SO WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH ALL THE SUITS…?

Reading the major news on Chrome today, you see all the bugs, problems, incompatibilities, speed tests, etc. comparing and talking about Chrome Version 0.2 versus Firefox version 3.0 or Internet Explorer version 8.0 Beta.

Does anyone else see the silliness?

Chrome Version 0.2…that is ZERO point TWO versus Firefox version 3.0 (THREEE point ZERO) versus IE version 8.0beta(EIGHT point ZERO).

Such a wide range of effort, experience and development time, the comparisons don’t make sense.

How about if we compare “apples to apples”?

Anyone remember the first version of Internet Explorer? Let’s go dig it up and see how it compares to Chrome.

How about going back to before the first Firefox beta. Any remember what Firefox 0.2 looked like? Anyone want to compare that to Chrome?

Let’s save comparing finished software to other finished software.

If you wantto get a true “apples to apples” comparison with Chrome, go find another version 0.2 browser…

Rather than rant on…

Why don’t we simply say:

“Thank you Google for taking the bold step, and spending lots of money, to encourage competition in the browser market. Also, thank you for making your source code free to the world.”

After pressure and the mention of Microsoft during the Sept 2, 2008 press conference, Google finally capitulated and gave up their top secret plans for Chrome.

Their explanation?

Google gets to all of their users through a browser. It’s an important part of their ecosystem.

Given that most users think the web is synonymous with Internet Explorer, the competing product given away on almost every computer for free, Google wanted to stimulate competition and help keep the browser ecosystem vibrant.

The more people are using the web and the Internet, the better Google’s business. In other words, any improvement in browsers is good for Google.

If the browser is faster, and people can get in 20% more browsing each day, plus the proportional amount of additional searching, Google wins.

Finally most people don’t know they have a choice of browsers and Google wanted to have a voice in the process.

Sounds good in theory….I still think the fact that most of Google’s business funnels through Internet Explorer is a scary proposition for Google.

Anyone else remember the rumors (and fact?) of Microsoft intentionally sabotaging applications running on DOS/Windows? (if you’ve forgotten…check out this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/1999/11/05/how_ms_played_the_incompatibility/)
